Haven Downham – Winner, Best Artwork

Hello, my name is Haven I am 10 years old in the 4th grade, and I live in Oklahoma . I am young equestrian, I ride Saddleseat with my horse named Lily. I am also learning Hunt and when I get older I will learn Hunter jumper, ( if my mom will think about it ) . I love being outside and hanging out at the stables with Lily. I also really love art, so I was excited about entering this contest. In school I like art, English, Science, the most . I love reading!!! I read things like fantasy, mystery and adventure. Wings of Fire is kind of perfect for that, and so it is my all time favorite book series.  Last year I entered this contest expecting nothing of it. I found out about it at school in social studies in Mrs. Ivester’s class when we watched the presentation on it . I learned so much about the constitution. Thank you so much for this opportunity!

Was this the first time you entered the contest?
Yes it was!!

How did you hear about the contest?
My math teacher had someone come and present the program to us.

What inspired your work?
Well, There are three branches of government that help make laws and a system for America to vote as a country. Also the golden apple was the attempt to achieve the declaration’s ideas through a free government. So I thought they are both from trees!! So why don’t I draw a tree?

What did you learn while creating your entry?
How grateful I am that we have a free country and a great government that makes the things for me and everyone else possible.

How do you plan to spread the word this year to your peers about the importance of the U.S Constitution?
If we didn’t have the constitution then we wouldn’t be here with all this freedom and the things we have today. We probably wouldn’t even be here.

How do your friends respond to history or talking about the Constitution?
“ good for you. “ “ congrats “. “ you mean da thing our math teacher showed us?”

What do you love about U.S History and the forming of our government?
How it is not ruled by one person and by all of our country.

Which U.S. historical site would you like to visit?
Well, I’ve been once when I was an infant, but I would love to see the White House in Washington DC

What in your life are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about saddleseat riding. I have been riding saddleseat for 3 years on my saddlebred. The goal of saddleseat is to have a high stepping gate that a saddlebred has. You get the high steps , you have to have your shoulder back and chest open. When you have your chest open. So does your horse!!!

How do you spend your free time?
I spend my free time at the barn with my show teammates and the horses, or drawing at my moms art studio (which is also the office to my dad)

What are your plans for the future?
Well I do know I want to train saddleseat riders. But my main goal is to ride in saddleseat finials some day.

If you could do one super impactful thing to help people, what would it be?
FIND A CURE FOR CANCER of all types!!!!!

Why is the Constitution relevant today?
It helps the law and judges with rights and wrongs of people who caused crime.
