Our Interview With Shaynlin
Was this the first time you entered the contest?
No, I actually entered the contest in 2021 and won Best High School Short Film!
How did you hear about the contest?
Shortly before entering the contest for the first time during my senior year of high school, I was searching for patriotic scholarship opportunities when I stumbled across Constituting America’s website.
What inspired your work?
My passion for the U.S. Constitution has inspired me to continue to advocate for constitutional literacy in America, and my PSA was created in hopes of encouraging viewers to seek a greater understanding of and appreciation for the Constitution and all of the freedoms granted by it.
What did you learn about the U.S. Constitution while creating your entry?
Returning to such a patriotic endeavor reminded me just how incredibly powerful the United States Constitution is. It has ensured that American citizens possess certain rights and freedoms that surpass the rights and freedoms of the government for centuries.
How do you plan to spread the word this year to your peers about the importance of the U.S. Constitution?
I will continue to reiterate the message communicated within my PSA and my 2021 short film. It is important for Americans to recognize that the Constitution empowers citizens by giving them the freedom to resist tyranny. Throughout this year and years to come, I plan to express just how rare these rights and freedoms are.
Which U.S. historical site would you like to visit?
I have not yet gotten the opportunity to visit Mount Rushmore, and I am certain that traveling to South Dakota to see the landmark would make for an unforgettable experience.
What are your career plans?
I am currently a graduate student enrolled in Central Methodist’s Master of Science in Clinical Counseling program. Following my graduation in 2027, I plan to open my own private practice as a licensed professional counselor. I am especially interested in play therapy and pastoral counseling. I would also love to incorporate my passions for crochet and poetry into a form of creative expression therapy.
How do you spend your free time?
I really prioritize and cherish time with my family and loved ones. I also enjoy crocheting, writing poetry, and volunteering at my church in my free time.
Why is the Constitution relevant today?
The Constitution will continue to be relevant as long as America exists and Americans value their rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The Constitution protects these rights in numerous ways, which means that the Constitution remains and will continue to remain one of the most vital documents in the United States.
