Our Interview With Grace

Was this the first time you entered the contest?
Yes! This was my first time.

How did you hear about the contest?
I found the contest while I was searching for scholarship opportunities online.

What inspired your work?
My work was inspired by the religious freedom prompt as well as the country music that I’ve listened to most of my life.

What did you learn about the U.S. Constitution while creating your entry?
I did not learn anything new about the constitution while writing this song, but I did get to remind myself as well as the people in my life who have heard this song of the importance of religious freedom in this country. It is just as much a blessing as it is something we must defend.

How do you plan to spread the word this year to your peers about the importance of the U.S Constitution?
I have already shared my song with some of the people I know. Beyond the song, I think it is important that we all encourage each other to remember the rights we are owed not just as Americans but as human beings. Each and every one of us deserves the respect and protection of our government.

Which U.S. historical site would you like to visit?
I would love to visit more of our national parks like Yosemite and Yellowstone. I feel like when we think about diversity in America, we never really think of the land itself when really, our beautiful nation is large enough to house a wide range of incredible landscapes. Aside from nature, I would really like to see anything in DC and follow that up with a trip over to the National Gallery of Art where my favorite painting by my favorite artist/ America’s most prominent Impressionist painter is housed (Mary Cassatt’s Little Girl in a Blue Armchair).

What are your career plans?
I am currently working on a degree that combines art and computer technologies. This program is meant to prepare me for a career in animation, video game design, simulation technologies, and/ or computer generated imagery. I actually already have two animated films I made in high school out now on my YouTube channel (search for “The Aclowntant UIL State Champion” and “Illinois Smith UIL State Runner Up”). These films, the degree I am pursuing, and even the song I wrote for Constituting America all go back to my favorite thing to do– storytelling. Really, I am just hoping that I am able to keep telling stories.

How do you spend your free time?
I spend most of my free time painting, drawing, singing covers with my guitar, and hanging out with my friends.

Why is the Constitution relevant today?
The Constitution is the foundational document with which we are able to defend our rights as Americans. While the 237-year-old document may not have a clear answer to every modern issue, it outlines the freedoms and protections necessary to challenge precedent and fight for change when needed.
