By late July 1776, the ink on the Declaration of Independence was barely dry, but the harsh reality of the Revolutionary War was looming off the coast of New York. A massive British armada—the largest expeditionary force Great Britain had ever assembled—began arriving on Staten Island with over 30,000 troops. General George Washington and his newly formed Continental Army faced the monumental task of defending New York City against seemingly impossible odds.
