Our Interview With Srushti
Was this the first time you entered the contest?
Yes, this was the first time I entered.
How did you hear about the contest?
My mom was searching around for different scholarships for me to apply for and she came across the Constituting America Scholarship.
What inspired your work?
In 4th grade we had an assignment to memorize the Preamble. So, it flashed in my memory the second I thought of the Constitution. I was really excited to relive that moment of achievement I had felt after reciting the entire Preamble from memory as a little girl. So as I wrote the lyrics, I attempted to incorporate some from that memory and dig a little deeper to explore the Preamble’s deeper message to America.
What did you learn about the U.S. Constitution while creating your entry?
I’ve learned that at the core of our country no matter what political issues arise, we all have a promise to protect each other and future generations to come. Whether that means recognizing our rights, our freedoms, etc. we have to learn to respect each other’s humanity and work together as one body of government. That promise is something that needs to be taken into consideration more deeply as we navigate our government in today’s society.
How do you plan to spread the word this year to your peers about the importance of the U.S Constitution?
I would encourage my peers to explore the Constitution by trying to read a page a day. The Constitution allows us to better understand the inner workings of our government. The more that we do our do-diligence as citizens to understand our government the greater the role we play in making our country what we want to be. Reading the Constitution is about maintaining our power as citizens to stay involved in our country’s affairs.
Which U.S. historical site would you like to visit?
I went to DC when I was in 8th grade but only got to see the Capitol building from far so I would love to go and see the inside of the Capitol.
What are your career plans?
I am currently pursuing a degree in Music Production and Engineering at Berklee College of Music.
How do you spend your free time?
I compose new music, collaborate and perform with fellow artists around campus, explore the beautiful city of Boston and get matcha at any chance I get.
Why is the Constitution relevant today?
I think it’s important to recognize that the Constitution educates us on more than just how our government works but also the lessons America has learned from our history. By implementing those lessons, not repeating our mistakes and continuing to stay educated, we are able to better navigate our government in today’s society.
